In about an hour, there were dozens of eyewitness photos
The story of the steam explosion in midtown New York City broke at about 3:30pm or so Pacific time yesterday. In about an hour, there were dozens of eyewitness photos of the event on the Yahoo-owned photo sharing site Flickr. It was an amazing example of online reader participation in news story gathering – the buzz term “user-generated content.”
The eyewitness photos prompted my managing editor to assign me to do an interactive flash slideshow combining the photos with interview accounts of what happened at the scene of the explosion.
I emailed three Flickr photographers who had put up photos. And all three responded within minutes. I conducted interviews with two of them, and combined their photos with those of other Flickr photographers to create this audio slideshow. Please take a look!
